Your stories from Newtown and surrounding areas

About us

We aim to raise and increase community awareness and understanding of dementia within Newtown and surrounding areas.

Dementia Friendly Newtown

Newtown is a growing community, supportive and inclusive of anybody living with dementia.

Where our band of dementia friends are active in Newtown and surrounding areas, people with dementia are empowered to have aspirations and to feel confident, knowing that they can contribute and live life the way they want.

Our Aim

We aim to raise awareness and understanding of the practical issues that affect people with dementia.

We can call on local professional help, and have a bank of supportive people who have practical experience.

We are working to involve local businesses, groups and individuals in pathways to making the lives of people living with dementia, and those affected, more attainable.

Be involved

Businesses, whether shops, garages, public services, or one man bands, can help to make their working environment more dementia friendly. Just invite us in, and see how it can benefit your business or service. You can arrange for your staff to attend a short dementia friends session at no cost, but very beneficial. Visit our website to find out how.

Dementia Friends

Dementia Friends is a national initiative that is being run by the Alzheimer’s Society. It is funded by the government, and aims to improve people’s understanding of dementia and its effects. Friends information sessions are run by local, trained volunteer Dementia Friend Champions. Each information session is free, lasts about one hour and can be done individually for your shop, business group or organisation, at a time to suit. They are interactive, they’re fun – and suitable for all ages!

Our History

In June 2016, a group of like-minded individuals, working in collaboration with Newtown Town Council and Alzheimer’s Society, held a public meeting which explored the idea of making Newtown a Dementia Friendly Community.

The interest generated was such that a Steering Committee was formed made up of carers, committed individuals, health and social care professionals and a range of other community and voluntary organisations.

After a further meetings, Karen Rodenburg, Dementia Friendly Communities Coordinator, Montgomeryshire & Radnorshire, announced on 19th July that Dementia Friendly Newtown (DFN)  had become the third community in the area to achieve “Working towards” status.

Our Mission

Our mission – Where our band of dementia friends are active in Newtown, people with dementia are empowered to have aspirations and to feel confident, knowing that they can contribute and live life the way they want.

“ Our promise is to help build Dementia Friendly Newtown made up of the whole community – shop assistants, public service workers, faith groups, businesses, police, fire and ambulance staff, bus drivers, school pupils, clubs and societies, and community leaders – people who are committed to working together to help those living with dementia to remain part of their community.”
